COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Microelectronic Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology is a structured, industry-focused program designed to prepare students for careers in semiconductor device design, fabrication, and integrated circuit technology. The curriculum builds a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computing, and electrical engineering in the early years, then progresses into advanced semiconductor processes, circuit design, and microfabrication techniques, supported by extensive cooperative education (co-op) experience in industry. In the first year, students begin with core subjects such as general chemistry for engineers, calculus, introductory semiconductor concepts, physics, computational problem solving, and digital systems. These courses are combined with general education requirements in writing, ethics, arts, and electives to develop both technical and communication skills. The second year strengthens engineering fundamentals through courses in circuits, multivariable calculus, statistics, experimental design, semiconductor devices, differential equations, and IC technology, along with physics and social science perspectives. This stage builds the analytical and problem-solving skills needed for advanced microelectronic study. In the third year, students begin their first major cooperative education experience, gaining real-world industry exposure. Academically, they study digital electronics, electromagnetic fields for microelectronics, and semiconductor process integration, while also completing STEM electives and general education immersion courses. The fourth year focuses on advanced topics such as linear systems, analog electronics, thin films, and lithography materials and processes, alongside continued co-op rotations. These courses provide deep understanding of how semiconductor devices are designed and manufactured at the microscopic level. In the final year, students complete senior design projects and study CMOS processing, along with professional and technical electives and additional general education immersion courses. The program totals 129 credit hours and integrates classroom learning, laboratory experience, and multiple co-op placements. This prepares graduates for careers in semiconductor manufacturing, electronics design, and microchip technology industries, where they contribute to the development of advanced electronic systems used in computing, communication, and modern digital devices.
