COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Imaging Science at Rochester Institute of Technology is a highly structured, science-intensive program designed to build strong foundations in physics, mathematics, computing, and optics while preparing students for advanced careers in imaging technology, research, and engineering. The 2025–2026 curriculum is carefully sequenced over four years to progress from foundational scientific principles to advanced imaging systems and research-based applications.In the first year, students begin with the Freshman Imaging Project sequence, which introduces them to real-world imaging systems through hands-on experimentation. Alongside this, they take core courses such as calculus, introductory imaging and video systems, vision and psychophysics, and university physics. These courses establish the mathematical and scientific base required for later advanced topics.The second year strengthens this foundation through more specialized coursework, including mathematical methods for imaging, color science, object-oriented scientific computing, probability and statistics, linear and Fourier methods, and modern physics. These subjects develop essential analytical and computational skills needed to understand how imaging systems function at both theoretical and applied levels.In the third year, students transition into core imaging science topics such as radiometry, geometric optics, physical optics, image processing, machine learning for image analysis, and interactions between light and matter. This stage emphasizes the scientific principles behind how images are formed, processed, and interpreted in different systems.The final year focuses on advanced applications and professional preparation. Students complete courses in imaging detectors, imaging systems analysis and modeling, and a two-part senior project that involves independent, research-driven work. They also fulfill experiential learning requirements and complete elective and immersion courses to broaden their academic experience.Overall, the Imaging Science program at Rochester Institute of Technology prepares students for highly technical careers in industries such as defense, healthcare, aerospace, entertainment, and artificial intelligence by combining rigorous scientific training with hands-on research and project experience.
