COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at Rochester Institute of Technology is a studio-intensive program designed to develop strong visual storytelling, drawing, and conceptual skills for careers in publishing, advertising, entertainment, gaming, and digital media. The 2025–2026 curriculum is structured to guide students from foundational art skills to advanced illustration practice and professional portfolio development over four years.In the first year, students focus on core foundations in drawing, 2D design, and 3D design while also completing general education requirements such as writing, global studies, and artistic perspective courses. This stage builds essential skills in composition, form, and visual communication that support all future illustration work.The second year introduces specialized illustration training, including Illustration I, Digital Illustration I, character design, anatomical illustration, and pre-visual world building. Students also continue developing technical and creative skills through art history, CAD studio electives, and general education courses focused on ethics and social perspectives.In the third year, students advance to higher-level coursework such as Illustration II and Digital Illustration II while also engaging in professional electives and immersion courses. These classes help students refine their personal artistic style, strengthen storytelling abilities, and gain deeper experience in both traditional and digital media techniques.The final year emphasizes professional preparation and portfolio development. Students complete Illustration III and a dedicated Illustration Portfolio course, where they compile their strongest work into a professional presentation for employers or graduate programs.
