COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Humanities, Computing, and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology is an interdisciplinary program that blends computing, digital media, and humanities-based critical thinking. The 2025–2026 curriculum is structured to help students understand how technology, culture, and design interact while building strong technical, analytical, and communication skills through a mix of theory, practice, and project-based learning.In the first year, students begin with foundational courses such as Computation and Culture and Industrial Origins of the Digital Age, which explore how technology shapes society. Alongside these, students take introductory programming or interactive design courses, web and mobile development, writing, and general education in ethics, social studies, and the arts. This year builds both technical literacy and critical thinking skills.The second year expands technical and design capabilities through courses like web and mobile development, database and data modeling, and new media design surveys. Students also strengthen analytical skills through statistics and broaden their academic understanding with global, scientific, and natural science perspectives. Career preparation for liberal arts students is also introduced at this stage.In the third year, students focus on advanced interdisciplinary work, including geospatial technologies, media narratives, and DHSS project courses. They also complete professional electives and general education immersions while gaining practical experience through a required co-op placement. This year emphasizes applied learning and real-world problem solving.The final year is dedicated to capstone development. Students complete a two-part DHSS Capstone sequence, where they design and execute a substantial project that integrates computing, design, and humanities concepts.
