COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Human-Centered Computing at Rochester Institute of Technology is an interdisciplinary, career-focused program designed to prepare students for technology careers that prioritize usability, accessibility, and human experience. The program is built around the idea that successful computing systems must be designed not only for technical performance but also for the needs, behaviors, and experiences of real users. As a result, students gain a strong foundation in computing, design thinking, and user-centered problem solving, allowing them to work effectively in fields such as software development, UX/UI design, data interaction, and digital product design. A key feature of the program is its strong emphasis on experiential learning through two required blocks of cooperative education or internships. These experiences provide students with significant full-time, paid industry work opportunities, helping them apply classroom knowledge in real professional environments while building valuable resumes and industry connections. Another important aspect of the degree is its flexibility through focused degree options. Students can choose two concentrations from six interdisciplinary areas, allowing them to tailor their studies based on personal interests and long-term career goals. This structure helps students build both breadth and depth in areas such as computing, design, psychology, and human-computer interaction. The program is also STEM-OPT visa eligible, which is a major advantage for international students. Under the STEM Optional Practical Training program, eligible F-1 visa students can remain in the United States for up to three years after graduation to gain additional professional experience in their field.
