COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in History at Rochester Institute of Technology is a structured program that combines traditional historical study with modern analytical tools such as computing, data science, and digital history. The 2025–2026 curriculum is designed to help students develop strong research, writing, and critical thinking skills while exploring diverse historical perspectives and preparing for careers or graduate study.In the first year, students begin with foundational courses such as Making History, statistics, writing, and introductory general education requirements. They also study non-Western or Indigenous history along with thematic history electives, helping them build a broad understanding of global historical contexts from the start of the program.The second year introduces interdisciplinary skills through computing and data-focused coursework, alongside additional history specialization courses and general education in ethics, science, and the arts. Students also begin exploring social science methods and prepare for experiential learning through a required internship or co-op in the summer.In the third year, students engage more deeply with advanced historical study, including Digital History and Hands-on History, while selecting multiple electives within their chosen thematic specialization. General education immersion requirements and open electives allow students to broaden their academic experience and customize their degree path.The final year focuses on advanced research and synthesis. Students complete a capstone seminar where they conduct original historical research and present their findings. Additional program electives and general education courses help refine their academic focus and prepare students for careers in education, research, public history, media, or further graduate study.Overall, the History BS at Rochester Institute of Technology integrates traditional historical scholarship with modern digital and analytical tools, equipping students to understand the past while applying their skills to contemporary global challenges.
