COURSE CURRICULUM

The English BS curriculum at the Rochester Institute of Technology is a four-year, 120-credit program that combines literary study, creative writing, and modern digital skills.In the first year, students begin with foundational courses such as English Studies and Literature and Cultural Studies, along with Text & Code, which explores the connection between writing and technology. They also complete general education courses in writing, global and social perspectives, ethics, and the arts. Introductory creative writing courses help students develop basic skills in prose and poetry.In the second year, students build on their storytelling and analytical abilities through courses like Storytelling and Data Methods for English Majors. They also take English electives and immersion courses while continuing general education in science and mathematics. This stage develops both creative thinking and analytical skills.In the third year, students gain more flexibility by selecting multiple English electives based on their interests, such as creative writing, media studies, or worldbuilding. Professional core courses are introduced to connect academic learning with career skills. Students are also encouraged to complete an internship or co-op to gain practical experience.In the fourth year, the focus is on advanced learning and career preparation. Students complete a capstone project involving research or creative work, along with additional professional core courses and electives. Overall, the curriculum blends traditional literary study with creative and digital approaches, preparing students for careers in writing, media, publishing, education, and related fields.
