COURSE CURRICULUM

The Electrical Engineering BS curriculum at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a comprehensive five-year program totaling 129 credit hours, designed to combine strong theoretical foundations with extensive hands-on and cooperative education experience. In the first year, students build a base in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, along with introductory engineering concepts such as digital systems and a freshman practicum. General education courses in writing, arts, and social sciences help develop communication and critical thinking skills.During the second year, the program focuses on core electrical engineering fundamentals, including circuits, semiconductor devices, digital systems, and computational problem solving. Advanced mathematics courses such as multivariable calculus and differential equations, along with physics, deepen students’ analytical abilities and prepare them for more complex engineering topics.The third year introduces advanced subjects like linear systems, electromagnetic fields, transmission lines, and digital electronics, along with complex variables in mathematics. This year also includes cooperative education, where students gain valuable industry experience by working in professional engineering environments.In the fourth year, students continue with specialized topics such as control systems, embedded systems design, analog electronics, and probability and statistics, while also completing additional co-op experiences. These practical placements allow students to apply their technical knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.The fifth and final year emphasizes advanced communication systems and multidisciplinary senior design projects, where students work on complex, real-world engineering problems in team settings. Professional and open electives allow further specialization based on individual interests. Overall, the curriculum blends rigorous academics with extensive practical training, preparing graduates for careers in electronics, robotics, communications, and other high-tech industries, as well as for advanced graduate studies.
