COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound) BS curriculum at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a four-year program totaling 125 credit hours, designed to combine foundational sciences with advanced sonography training and extensive clinical experience. In the first year, students build a strong base in biology, statistics, and mathematics through courses such as General Biology I and II with labs, precalculus, and introductory statistics, along with general education subjects including writing, ethics, arts, and social perspectives.During the second year, the focus shifts to essential medical and scientific knowledge, including medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, and physics. These courses provide a deeper understanding of the human body and the physical principles behind imaging technology, preparing students for more specialized sonography coursework. General education immersion courses and electives continue to broaden students’ academic experience.In the third year, students begin specialized training in sonography, studying topics such as pathophysiology, scanning techniques, ultrasound physics, and cross-sectional anatomy. They also learn patient care practices and develop hands-on technical skills required for operating ultrasound equipment and interpreting images.The fourth year emphasizes advanced sonography topics and intensive clinical training. Students take courses in obstetrical, gynecological, abdominal, and vascular sonography, along with research and administrative concepts. A major component of this year is clinical sonography, where students gain real-world experience in healthcare settings through extended clinical placements. Overall, the curriculum integrates scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and clinical practice, preparing graduates for professional roles as diagnostic medical sonographers or for further advancement in healthcare fields.
