COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computing and Information Technologies BS curriculum at RIT is a four-year program totaling 126 credit hours, designed to provide a strong foundation in software development, networking, cybersecurity, and IT systems management along with practical, real-world experience. In the first year, students focus on core computing skills through courses in software development, discrete mathematics, computer systems, cybersecurity, and technical communication, along with general education subjects in writing, ethics, and global perspectives. This stage builds essential programming and problem-solving abilities.In the second year, the curriculum expands into applied IT areas such as web and mobile development, routing and switching, task automation, databases, and systems administration. Students also complete statistics and general education courses, while beginning to explore different areas of interest within information technology. A co-op or research experience is introduced, allowing students to gain early exposure to professional environments.The third year emphasizes user experience design, information modeling, and specialized concentration courses that allow students to tailor their degree toward specific IT fields. General education courses and electives continue to broaden their knowledge, while additional co-op or research opportunities further strengthen practical skills.In the fourth year, students complete advanced concentration courses and a two-part senior development project, where they design and implement a comprehensive IT solution. This capstone experience allows them to apply their accumulated knowledge to real-world challenges. Overall, the program combines technical coursework, flexible specialization, and hands-on experience, preparing graduates for careers in software development, networking, cybersecurity, and IT management across a wide range of industries.
