COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computational Mathematics BS curriculum at RIT is a four-year program totaling 122 credit hours, designed to integrate advanced mathematics with computer science and practical problem-solving skills. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in programming and calculus through courses in computer science and Calculus I and II, along with general education subjects in writing, arts, and science. This stage introduces both computational thinking and core mathematical concepts.In the second year, the curriculum becomes more rigorous, focusing on topics such as discrete mathematics, multivariable calculus, probability and statistics, differential equations, linear algebra, and computer science theory. These courses develop analytical reasoning, mathematical modeling skills, and a deeper understanding of algorithms and computation. Students also begin preparing for careers through a job search seminar and continue general education studies.The third year emphasizes advanced mathematical topics such as numerical analysis and real variables, along with program electives that allow students to explore specialized areas of interest. General education and elective courses provide additional flexibility, enabling students to broaden their academic experience while focusing on applied or theoretical mathematics.In the fourth year, students complete higher-level coursework including mathematical modeling and abstract algebra, along with additional electives and immersion requirements. The program also includes an experiential learning component, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world or research settings. Overall, the curriculum combines mathematics, computing, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in data science, scientific computing, finance, and technology, as well as for advanced graduate studies.
