COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at RIT is a four-year program that provides a strong foundation in chemical principles, mathematics, physics, and laboratory techniques while allowing students to explore advanced topics through electives. In the first year, students study advanced general chemistry with lab work along with calculus and general education courses in arts, ethics, social perspectives, and writing, building core scientific knowledge and analytical skills. In the second year, students move into more specialized areas such as quantitative analysis, analytical methods, and comprehensive organic chemistry with labs, along with multivariable calculus, physics, and biochemistry, which deepen their understanding of chemical reactions and laboratory techniques.In the third year, students focus on advanced chemistry topics including instrumental analysis, physical chemistry, and experimental lab work, along with physics and immersion courses that broaden interdisciplinary learning. This year emphasizes analytical methods, experimental design, and the application of physical principles to chemical systems. In the fourth year, students study advanced subjects such as nanoscale chemistry, structural inorganic chemistry, and scientific writing while completing advanced chemistry electives, general education courses, and open electives, allowing them to tailor their studies toward specific career or academic goals.Overall, the program totals 123 credit hours and combines rigorous coursework with extensive laboratory experience and research opportunities. It prepares students for careers in pharmaceuticals, environmental science, materials science, and research, as well as for advanced graduate or professional studies in chemistry, medicine, and related scientific fields.
