COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Molecular Bioscience at RIT is a four-year program that provides a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and biotechnology while emphasizing laboratory experience and elective flexibility. In the first year, students study introductory biology covering organisms, ecosystems, molecules, and cells along with general and analytical chemistry and labs, applied calculus, and general education courses in arts, social perspectives, and writing, which help build core scientific knowledge and essential skills. In the second year, students move into more advanced subjects such as molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, tissue culture techniques, and organic chemistry with labs, along with statistics and ethics, giving them deeper insight into molecular and cellular processes and laboratory methods. A biology co-op experience during the summer provides early exposure to real-world scientific work environments.In the third year, students take courses in genetics, bioinformatics analysis, and biochemistry while beginning to focus on specialized interests through program electives and open electives. This year emphasizes analytical skills, data interpretation, and advanced laboratory techniques, along with continued academic flexibility. In the fourth year, students complete additional program electives, immersion courses, and open electives, allowing them to tailor their studies toward specific career goals such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or research. The program concludes with an experiential learning requirement that ensures practical application of knowledge in a professional or research setting.Overall, the program totals 121 credit hours and combines rigorous coursework with extensive laboratory experience and real-world exposure. It prepares students for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and research, as well as for graduate or professional studies in fields such as medicine, biomedical sciences, and molecular biology.
