COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in ASL–English Interpretation at RIT is a structured four-year program designed to develop advanced American Sign Language fluency and professional interpreting skills for communication between deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing communities. In the first year, students begin with intermediate ASL courses along with an introduction to interpreting, general education requirements in writing, ethics, mathematics, global perspectives, and social studies, which help build a strong academic and linguistic foundation. The second year focuses on advancing ASL proficiency and understanding deaf culture through courses in linguistics of ASL, processing skills development, and additional ASL practice, along with general education in arts, science, and electives that broaden students’ academic experience.In the third year, students transition into professional interpreting coursework, including interpreting fundamentals, ethical applications, and advanced ASL language development. This stage emphasizes skill-building in both ASL and English interpretation while integrating immersion experiences and electives that support academic flexibility and deeper learning. The fourth year is heavily focused on real-world practice and professional preparation through practicum experiences, advanced interpreting courses in both English-to-ASL and ASL-to-English translation, and seminars addressing issues in interpreting. Students also complete immersion experiences and additional electives that enhance specialization and professional readiness.Overall, the program totals 123 credit hours and combines intensive language training, cultural competency, ethical practice, and hands-on interpreting experience. It prepares graduates for careers as certified ASL–English interpreters in educational institutions, healthcare settings, community organizations, and professional environments, ensuring they are fully equipped to facilitate accurate and culturally sensitive communication across diverse populations.
