COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Modern Language and Culture (Chinese Track) at RIT is a structured four-year program designed to develop advanced Chinese language proficiency while integrating cultural understanding and career-focused interdisciplinary study. In the first year, students begin with foundational Chinese language courses along with general education requirements in writing, ethics, social sciences, arts, and sciences, helping them build strong communication skills and a broad academic base. The second year focuses on intermediate-level Chinese language development, including conversational skills, reading, and writing, while also incorporating mathematics, general education immersion courses, and a selected focus area that allows students to connect language learning with another academic or professional field.In the third year, students participate in a required study abroad experience, which provides immersive exposure to Chinese language and culture in a real-world international setting. Alongside this experience, students take advanced Chinese language courses and continue their focus area studies, further strengthening both linguistic fluency and disciplinary knowledge. The fourth year emphasizes professional application of language skills through courses such as Professional Chinese and additional focus area electives, allowing students to refine their ability to use Chinese in academic, business, or technical contexts. The program concludes with a capstone seminar in Applied Modern Language and Culture, where students integrate their language proficiency, cultural understanding, and interdisciplinary knowledge into a final project.Overall, the program totals 120 credit hours and combines language mastery, cultural immersion, and academic specialization. It prepares graduates for global careers in fields such as international business, translation, diplomacy, education, technology, and multinational organizations, where advanced Chinese language skills and cross-cultural competence are highly valuable.
