COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics at RIT is a rigorous program designed to build strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills while preparing students for careers in science, engineering, technology, finance, and research. In the first year, students begin with foundational courses in computer science, calculus, mathematics and statistics seminars, and general education subjects, helping them develop essential mathematical thinking and communication skills. The second year focuses on core mathematical development through courses in discrete mathematics, multivariable and vector calculus, probability, statistics, differential equations, and linear algebra, along with general education in ethics, science, global, and social perspectives, providing a well-rounded academic base.In the third year, students transition into advanced mathematical theory and specialization, including real analysis and a series of program electives that allow them to tailor their studies to specific interests such as applied, computational, or theoretical mathematics. This year also includes immersion courses that broaden interdisciplinary knowledge and prepare students for complex problem-solving in real-world contexts. The fourth year emphasizes advanced topics such as numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, and abstract algebra, along with additional electives and immersion experiences that strengthen both theoretical understanding and practical application skills.The program concludes with an experiential learning requirement that may include research, internships, or applied projects, ensuring students gain hands-on experience before graduation. Overall, the Applied Mathematics BS totals 121 credit hours and integrates theory, computation, and application. It prepares students for careers in data science, actuarial science, engineering, financial analysis, research, and graduate study by developing strong quantitative reasoning, programming skills, and the ability to model and solve complex real-world problems effectively.
