COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studio Arts BFA (Ceramics option) curriculum at Rochester Institute of Technology for 2025–2026 is a 120-credit, four-year program that combines foundational art training with specialized ceramics practice and creative development. In the first year, students build essential artistic skills through courses in drawing, 2D and 3D design, along with general education in writing, social, and global perspectives. This stage focuses on developing visual thinking, creativity, and basic technical abilities.In the second year, students begin specializing in ceramics, studying sculptural processes, thrown vessel forms, mold-making, and advanced ceramic techniques. These courses are complemented by 4D design, CAD drawing, and art history, helping students understand both traditional and contemporary approaches to art. General education requirements continue, including ethics and immersion courses.The third year emphasizes deeper artistic exploration and personal style development through repeated studio practice courses such as ceramic practice and processes, along with ideation and series development. Students also complete electives and art history courses, allowing them to broaden their creative and conceptual understanding.In the fourth year, students refine their skills and prepare for professional practice. Courses include advanced ceramic work, business practices for artists, and a senior capstone project, where students create a final body of work that reflects their artistic vision and technical expertise. Additional electives provide flexibility for further exploration.Overall, the curriculum blends hands-on studio work, conceptual development, and professional preparation, equipping students with the skills needed for careers as ceramic artists, designers, or creative professionals, as well as for advanced study in fine arts.
