COURSE CURRICULUM

The New Media Design BFA curriculum at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for 2025–2026 is a four-year, 122-credit program that blends art, design, and interactive technology to prepare students for careers in digital media and user experience design. In the first year, students focus on foundational skills in drawing, 2D design, and digital media through courses such as Drawing I, 2D Design I, and the New Media Design Digital Survey sequence. They also begin learning interactive design basics and complete general education requirements, including writing, science, or mathematics, which help build strong communication and analytical skills.In the second year, the program introduces more technical and interactive coursework. Students study algorithmic problem solving for interactive design, 3D design, animation, and interactive design studios. Alongside these core courses, they continue general education in areas such as arts, global studies, and social perspectives, helping them develop a broad understanding of culture and design context while strengthening technical and creative abilities.The third year focuses on advanced design skills and specialization. Students take courses in graphical user interfaces, motion graphics, and higher-level interactive design. They also explore art history, professional electives, and open electives, allowing them to develop personal interests and build a stronger portfolio. This stage emphasizes combining creativity with usability, preparing students for professional design challenges.In the fourth year, students complete a capstone experience across two semesters, where they design and develop a major project that demonstrates their skills in interactive media and user experience. They also take advanced interactive design and experimental media courses while completing general education immersion requirements and additional electives. The capstone is designed to simulate real-world industry work and often serves as a key portfolio piece.Overall, the program provides a strong balance of artistic foundations, technical skills, and interactive media design practice. It prepares students for careers in UI/UX design, motion graphics, digital product design, and interactive media development in industries such as technology, entertainment, and creative agencies.
