COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design at Rochester Institute of Technology is a structured, studio-based program that builds strong foundations in visual communication, design thinking, and digital media over four years. The 2025–2026 curriculum is designed to gradually move students from fundamental art and design principles to advanced professional practice and portfolio development.In the first year, students focus on foundational skills in drawing, 2D and 3D design, and introductory graphic design tools and techniques. They also begin typography and studio-based work while completing general education courses in writing, global studies, and the arts. This year builds essential creative and technical skills needed for advanced design work.The second year introduces more specialized areas of graphic design, including typography, motion design, interactive design, photography, and design history. Students begin to explore how visual communication works across digital and print platforms while also developing critical thinking through ethical, social, and scientific perspectives.In the third year, students move into intermediate and professional-level coursework such as advanced studio practice, interactive media, and design systems. They also take professional practice courses that prepare them for internships and real-world design environments. Electives in art history, CAD studio work, and professional design allow students to customize their learning path.The final year is centered on capstone development and advanced systems thinking. Students complete a two-part Graphic Design Capstone project that focuses on building a professional portfolio and solving complex design problems.
