COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Animation (Animation option) at Rochester Institute of Technology is a 120-credit program designed to develop strong artistic, technical, and storytelling skills in animation. In the first year, students build a creative foundation through courses in drawing, animation basics, film history, and digital imaging, while also completing general education requirements such as writing and global perspectives. They begin exploring both traditional and digital techniques, including 2D and 3D design or modeling.In the second year, the curriculum emphasizes storytelling and technical development, with courses in animation writing, storyboarding, and the history and aesthetics of animation. Students choose specialized paths such as 2D animation, 3D animation, or stop-motion, and continue developing skills in digital animation, modeling, sound recording, and production workshops. General education courses in ethics and science further broaden their academic perspective.During the third year, students advance their animation skills through workshops, performance animation, and professional electives, while also learning about business and career opportunities in the animation industry. Additional electives and immersion courses allow students to refine their interests and expand their creative abilities.In the fourth year, the focus shifts to professional preparation and portfolio development. Students complete advanced electives, history courses, and a two-part capstone project, where they create a major animation work demonstrating their skills and creativity. Overall, the program combines artistic development, technical expertise, and industry knowledge, preparing graduates for careers in animation, film production, and related creative industries.
