COURSE CURRICULUM

The 3D Digital Design BFA with a 3D Visualization option at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a four-year program totaling 120 credit hours, designed to develop both creative and technical expertise in digital design and visualization. In the first year, students build a strong artistic and design foundation through courses in 2D and 3D design, drawing, and introductory 3D modeling and imaging, along with general education subjects such as writing, science, and global perspectives. This stage introduces core visual concepts and basic digital tools used in the industry.In the second year, the focus shifts toward more advanced technical skills, including modeling strategies, visual scripting, real-time design, materials, and anatomical frameworks. Students also learn about project pipelines and begin integrating programming and art history into their work, helping them understand both the technical and creative aspects of 3D design.During the third year, students deepen their specialization in 3D visualization through elective courses, while also studying the history of 3D digital design, professional practices, and collaborative projects. Immersion and elective courses allow students to expand their knowledge and refine their personal interests within the field, while gaining experience in teamwork and real-world design processes.In the fourth year, students complete senior capstone projects that showcase their skills in 3D visualization, along with advanced electives and contemporary design practices. These projects help build a professional portfolio essential for entering the industry. Overall, the curriculum combines artistic creativity, technical proficiency, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in areas such as animation, gaming, virtual reality, architecture visualization, and digital media production.
