COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) at Rensselaer requires a total of 30 graduate credits, including 6 credits earned through the master’s thesis. All coursework must be at the 4000- or 6000-level, and no courses previously used to satisfy undergraduate degree requirements can be counted toward the graduate degree. Of the 24 non-thesis credits, at least 12 must be at the 6000 level, while no more than 12 may be 4000-level courses. Students are required to take at least one MATH or MATP course, with MANE 5000 also satisfying this requirement. A minimum of 15 credits must carry the MANE prefix, though exceptions require approval from both the MANE Graduate Program Director and the student’s adviser. Up to 9 credits may be taken from other departments within the School of Engineering or the School of Science, and up to 6 credits from schools outside these areas, subject to prior approval. Students may also include a maximum of 3 credits of Individual Project or Independent Study, which cannot be conducted with their graduate research advisor. Full-time students are required to register each semester for MANE 6900 and participate in the mandated seminars, a requirement that does not apply to Co-Terminal Program students. This structure ensures a rigorous balance of coursework, research, and professional development.
