COURSE CURRICULUM

Master of Science in Mathematics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute must satisfy the requirements set by the Office of Graduate Education and develop a Plan of Study approved by both the department and the office. The program emphasizes depth and breadth in mathematical training while allowing flexibility to align with individual academic and professional goals. Each student’s Plan of Study must include at least four graduate-level (6000) courses of 4 credits each, with a minimum of two courses numbered between MATH 6000 and MATH 6390, ensuring exposure to advanced mathematical theory and techniques. Additionally, students must complete at least four courses coded MATH or MATP, each worth 4 credits, to build a solid foundation across various mathematical disciplines. To integrate practical application and research experience, students are also required to engage in a capstone professional experience by registering for and successfully completing either MATH 6980 (Master’s Project) or MATH 6970 (Master’s Practicum). The practicum option may include a graduate internship or approved applied research, providing real-world experience under faculty supervision. This rigorous yet flexible structure ensures that graduates possess both theoretical expertise and professional readiness for advanced study or careers in mathematics, industry, and research.
