COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.S. in Information Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute requires students to complete a set of core courses designed to provide a comprehensive foundation across key IT domains, ensuring breadth and depth of knowledge. Core courses cover Database Systems, including CSCI 4380 Database Systems and ITWS 6250 Database Applications and Systems; Data Analytics with ITWS 6350 Data Science; Software Design and Engineering through CSCI 4440 Software Design and Documentation and ITWS 6700 Software Development; Management of Technology via ITWS 6300 Business Issues for Engineers and Scientists (or an approved MGMT elective for accelerated or dual-degree students); and Human-Computer Interaction, including COMM 6420 Foundations of HCI Usability and MGMT 6060 Technology Strategy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. Students may also pursue a Master’s Thesis (ITWS 6990) for 3-6 credit hours. For those who have completed the core requirements, advanced courses allow specialization in areas such as Database Systems, Data Analytics, Software Design and Engineering, Management of Technology, and Human-Computer Interaction. Advanced offerings include CSCI 6390 Data Mining, ITWS 6400 X-Informatics, ITWS 6600 Data Analytics, MGMT 6080 Networks and Value Creation, MGMT 6140 Managing Digitization and Transformation, COMM 6880 Interactive Data Visualization, and MGMT 6060 Technology Strategy in the Age of AI. Students culminate the degree with one of the capstone options: ITWS 6800 Master’s Capstone, ITWS 6980 Master’s Project, or ITWS 6990 Master’s Thesis.
