COURSE CURRICULUM

Master of Science (M.S.) with a thesis in Electrical Engineering (ELEC) or Computer and Systems Engineering (CSYS) must fulfill both Institute requirements and program-specific criteria. The degree requires a total of 30 credits, which include six to nine thesis credits, with six credits being standard and nine credits allowed only for research projects involving exceptional effort, as justified by the student’s research advisor. At least 15 of the non-thesis credits must be at the 6000 level, ensuring advanced-level coursework, and a minimum of 12 credits must be completed within the ECSE Department to provide focused disciplinary depth. Students are also required to take at least one mathematics elective, typically 3–4 credits, with a MATH or MATP prefix to support analytical and computational skills. Up to six transfer credits may be applied toward the degree, and no more than three credits can be earned through individual projects (e.g., ECSE 6980) or independent study (e.g., ECSE 6940). Courses at the 1000- or 2000-level do not count toward degree requirements, ensuring that all coursework reflects graduate-level rigor. Collectively, these requirements ensure that students develop both advanced technical knowledge and research competence necessary to contribute meaningfully to the field of electrical and computer systems engineering.
