COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute requires the completion of 30 graduate credit hours, with a minimum of 21 credits dedicated to coursework. Of these, at least 15 credits must be at the 6000 level within the Chemistry department, ensuring an advanced and rigorous foundation in chemical sciences. With approval from the Chemistry Graduate Committee, one of these courses may be substituted with a course from another department to support interdisciplinary study. The program also incorporates research experience, allowing students to engage in hands-on projects that enhance technical skills and scientific inquiry. Students may fulfill the research requirement through a thesis (CHEM 6990) ranging from six to nine credits, or a smaller research project (CHEM 6970) worth three credits. Additionally, only one semester of CHEM 6900 may be applied toward the 30-credit minimum. This structure ensures that students gain both comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing them for careers in industry, government, or further academic study.
