COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer requires students to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours, with specific requirements depending on the degree route. For the Master of Science (M.S.), at least 21 credits must be earned through coursework, while the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) requires a full 30 credits of coursework. Within this framework, students must take at least three BME courses at the 6000 level, ensuring advanced, graduate-level knowledge in biomedical engineering, and may include no more than two courses at the 4000 level. Additionally, all students are required to complete one course in the life sciences, covering biology or physiology, and one course in advanced mathematics or statistics to provide a strong foundation for data analysis and technical problem-solving. To ensure that individual educational and professional goals are met, each student, in consultation with their academic adviser, must develop a personalized Plan of Study that aligns with both Institute-wide graduate requirements and departmental standards. This plan serves as a roadmap for completing coursework, selecting electives, and, for M.S. students, designing and completing a thesis project that demonstrates original research. Overall, the program is structured to balance foundational knowledge, specialized technical expertise, and practical skills, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, or further advanced study.
