COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.S. in Astronomy at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute requires a combination of core courses, elective coursework, and a capstone research or professional project tailored to the student’s interests and career goals. Students must take one advanced physics course from options including Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics I or II, or Statistical Mechanics, each providing a strong foundation in theoretical and mathematical methods essential for astronomical study. Additionally, students complete at least eight credits from astronomy and astrophysics courses such as Observational Astronomy, Astrophysics, General Relativity, Origin of Life: A Cosmic Perspective, Independent Study, or Special Topics in Astronomy and Astrophysics, allowing them to explore specialized areas in both observational and theoretical research. To culminate the program, students engage in a 6- to 9-credit thesis or multiple-semester professional project, which may involve original research in astronomy or astrophysics or participation in a structured applied project. This combination of rigorous coursework and hands-on research ensures that graduates develop both technical proficiency and practical experience in the field. The flexible structure allows students to align their studies with personal interests and professional objectives, preparing them for careers in academic research, industry, government agencies, or further graduate study, while also fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and advanced analytical skills essential to success in modern astronomy.
