COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.S. in Architectural Sciences with a concentration in Architectural Acoustics at Rensselaer is a 30-credit program designed to provide advanced training in the science and design of acoustically optimized environments. The curriculum integrates theoretical, technical, and practical approaches to architectural acoustics, preparing students to address the complex challenges of designing performance spaces and other aurally sensitive environments. In the fall semester, students take ARCH 4840 - Architectural Acoustics I, ARCH 6810 - Research Design Seminar, ARCH 6840 - Engineering Acoustics, ARCH 6860 - Applied Psychoacoustics, and ARCH 6870 - Sonics Research Laboratory I, establishing a strong foundation in acoustical theory, engineering principles, psychoacoustics, and hands-on experimental research. During the spring semester, students progress to ARCH 4850 - Architectural Acoustics II, ARCH 6830 - Graduate Thesis Seminar: Acoustics, ARCH 6880 - Sonics Research Laboratory II, and ARCH 6890 - Aural Architecture, further developing expertise in sound behavior, advanced research methods, and the integration of acoustics into architectural design. The program culminates in a Master’s Project (ARCH 6980) or Master’s Thesis (ARCH 6990), allowing students to conduct in-depth research or applied design work in architectural acoustics. Through this curriculum, graduates gain the technical, analytical, and creative skills necessary for careers in acoustical consulting, architectural design, engineering, and research, equipping them to improve the auditory quality of diverse built environments.
