COURSE CURRICULUM

M.S. in Applied Mathematics at Rensselaer must satisfy the requirements of the Office of Graduate Education and follow a Plan of Study approved by both the office and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Each student’s program of study must include a minimum of four graduate-level (6000) courses of four credits each, with at least two of these courses in mathematics (MATH 6XXX or MATP 6XXX). Additionally, students must complete at least four courses coded MATH or MATP, each worth four credits. To broaden their academic experience, students are also required to take at least one 3- or 4-credit course at the 4000 or 6000 level outside the department, selected in consultation with their math adviser. A key component of the degree is a capstone professional experience, which may be satisfied in multiple ways: completing a Master’s Project in Mathematics (MATH 6980), participating in a Master’s Practicum such as a graduate cooperative internship or the Applied Mathematics Industry Workshop (subject to faculty approval), or taking two 6000-level MATH or MATP courses with specific second-digit course codes, depending on the chosen option. These requirements ensure that students develop both advanced mathematical expertise and practical, applied experience, preparing them for careers in industry, government, or further doctoral study.
