COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) requires the completion of at least 30 graduate-level credits, combining core coursework, electives, and a capstone project to ensure both depth and breadth of knowledge. Students must complete at least three of the five 4-credit MSE core graduate courses, which include Advanced Thermodynamics, Advanced Mechanical Properties, Advanced Structure and Bonding, Advanced Electronic Properties, and Advanced Kinetics, providing a solid foundation in essential materials principles. In addition, students must take at least six elective credits from 6000-level courses offered by the MSE department, allowing for specialization in areas of interest within the field. Any remaining required credits may be fulfilled through 6000-level courses offered by the School of Engineering or the School of Science, giving students flexibility to explore interdisciplinary topics relevant to materials science. A one-semester capstone independent study project, typically 3 or 4 credits, is also required, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical or research-oriented problems under faculty supervision. All elective course selections must receive prior approval from both the student’s academic adviser and the graduate curriculum coordinator to ensure alignment with program objectives and professional goals. This structured combination of coursework, electives, and an independent project prepares graduates for advanced careers in materials engineering or for continued study in research-focused programs.
