COURSE CURRICULUM

Systems Engineering and Technology Management (SETM) at Rensselaer is distinguished by its integration of a management and industrial and systems engineering core with the student’s undergraduate engineering discipline, providing a unique combination of technical and managerial expertise. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, including foundational coursework such as an introductory engineering statistics course (e.g., ENGR 2600). The program curriculum includes five required 6000-level courses that form the management and decision sciences foundation: ISYE 6610 (Systems Modeling in Decision Sciences), ISYE 6620 (Discrete-Event Simulation), MGMT 6020 (Financial Management I), MGMT 7740 (Accounting for Reporting and Control), and one course from a choice of MGMT 6060 (Technology Strategy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence), MGMT 6080 (Networks and Value Creation), or MGMT 6620 (Principles of Technological Entrepreneurship). The curriculum culminates in a three-course technical concentration aligned with the student’s area of engineering focus, which may include 6000- or 4000-level courses. Alternatively, students may complete two technical concentration courses along with a Master’s Project. To fulfill the minimum 30-credit requirement, students also select two electives approved by their adviser. At least half of all credits applied toward the graduate plan of study must be at the 6000 level or higher, and students enrolling in co-listed courses must register for the higher-level section to ensure graduate-level credit. This structure equips graduates with both specialized technical knowledge and advanced management skills to excel in technology-driven industries.
