COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Architecture program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute follows a structured three-year, six-semester curriculum designed to develop professional expertise, design proficiency, and technical knowledge. In the first year, students engage in foundational courses, beginning with Graduate Architecture Design 1 and 2, Digital Constructs 1 and 2, History, Theory, & Criticism 1 and 2, and complementary courses in structures, construction systems, environmental and ecological systems, and entrepreneurship in architecture, totaling 33 credits across fall and spring semesters. Applicants with advanced standing may start directly in the second-year fall semester. The second year emphasizes integrated design and environmental parametrics, with Graduate Architecture Design 3 and 4, Structures 2, Building Integration 1 and 2, History, Theory, & Criticism 3, Professional Practice 2, and general electives, totaling 36 credits. The third year, conducted at CASE NYC, focuses on advanced design and research, including Graduate Architecture Design 5, Final Project Research Seminar, Research Design Seminar, Professional Practice 1, Bridge to Practice, Graduate Final Project, and professional and general electives, totaling 31 credits. Across the program, students progressively build their design, technical, and professional skills while integrating advanced building technologies, environmental strategies, and research methods. The curriculum culminates in a comprehensive Graduate Final Project, preparing graduates for licensure and practice as innovative, socially and ecologically responsible architects.
