Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, commonly known as RPI, is a private research university located in Troy, New York, United States. Founded in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton, it holds the distinction of being the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world and the Western Hemisphere. The institute was established to promote the practical application of science to everyday life, a vision that continues to shape its mission today. Its 265-acre campus sits on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River and includes modern facilities such as the Rensselaer Technology Park, a 1,250-acre site designed to support research, innovation, and collaboration with industry. RPI is classified among the R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity, highlighting its leading role in global scientific advancement.In its early years, RPI awarded the first civil engineering degrees in the United States and became a model for technical education. Throughout the nineteenth century, it evolved into a vibrant polytechnic institute, offering programs in applied science and engineering. The institute endured several devastating fires but rebuilt each time, expanding under strong leadership, notably that of President Palmer Ricketts in the early 1900s. He broadened academic offerings and led significant campus development, establishing RPI as a center for engineering and technology. After World War II, enrollment rose sharply as veterans attended under the GI Bill, prompting the construction of new residence halls and research facilities.In 1999, Shirley Ann Jackson became president and introduced The Rensselaer Plan, an ambitious strategy to strengthen academics, research, and campus infrastructure. Major additions such as the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center and the East Campus Athletic Village reflect this modernization. Today, RPI continues to be a global leader in engineering, science, and innovation, maintaining a tradition of excellence and forward-thinking education that spans more than two centuries.
