COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Public Policy (MPP) curriculum is thoughtfully structured over two years, combining a strong foundational core with opportunities for specialization and applied learning. The first year is primarily dedicated to a rigorous core curriculum that reflects Pepperdine’s distinctive perspective on public policy as a form of meaningful public service. Students are introduced to both the philosophical and analytical dimensions of policymaking, exploring how ethical considerations intersect with economic and political frameworks. A central component is the James Q. Wilson Core, which emphasizes a well-rounded approach by integrating quantitative analysis with an exploration of “Great Ideas” related to government, citizenship, and the principles that have shaped American public life. During the first year, students study topics such as ethics, culture, markets, and politics, alongside courses in applied economic analysis, research methods, and policy strategy, while also engaging in professional development and introductory electives.In the second year, the program shifts toward greater flexibility and specialization. Students choose from areas such as Applied Economic Policy, American Policy and Politics, Dispute Resolution, International Relations and National Security, or State and Local Policy, allowing them to align their studies with career goals. The curriculum includes multiple elective courses that deepen expertise in these fields, along with continued professional development. A key highlight of the program is the Policy Research Seminar, which serves as a capstone experience where students apply their knowledge to real-world policy issues through in-depth research and analysis. Overall, the curriculum blends theory, ethics, and practical skills, preparing graduates to become thoughtful, analytical, and effective leaders in public policy.
