COURSE CURRICULUM

The MFA in Screenwriting program is designed to prepare students for careers as screen and television writers while also shaping them into cultural leaders in film and media. The curriculum emphasizes storytelling within the broader context of contemporary culture, explored through disciplines such as ethics, philosophy, film studies, and religion. Aligned with Pepperdine’s mission, the program encourages students to pursue lives of purpose, service, and leadership. Admission is competitive and requires a statement of purpose, a résumé of writing experience, a writing sample, three letters of recommendation, and an interview. The program consists of 48 to 64 units and must be completed within seven years.The coursework is divided into writing, film studies, internship, and a final thesis portfolio. Writing courses form the core, requiring 28 to 36 units, including foundational classes like Writing for Screen and Television and The Storyteller as Cultural Leader, along with rotating workshops in areas such as comedy, drama, film genres, adaptations, and advanced media writing. Students also complete 12 units in film studies, covering film theory, American cinema history, and the relationship between literature and film. Practical industry experience is gained through a required internship. The program culminates in a thesis portfolio, where students produce substantial original work such as screenplays or television scripts, guided by a faculty committee. Additionally, students submit a vocational statement outlining their values, goals, and vision as writers. Electives allow further exploration of specialized topics like global cinema and film perspectives. Overall, the program blends creative development, academic study, and professional preparation to equip graduates for success in the entertainment industry.
