ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Pepperdine University is a private, faith-based research university affiliated with the Churches of Christ, located in Los Angeles County, California, with its main campus overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Malibu. Founded in 1937 by entrepreneur George Pepperdine in South Los Angeles, the institution was established with a dual mission of providing high-quality liberal arts education while fostering strong Christian values. Despite early challenges during the Great Depression and later social unrest in South Los Angeles, the university grew steadily, expanding its academic programs and student population. In response to rising costs, urban challenges, and the need for long-term growth, Pepperdine relocated its primary undergraduate programs to Malibu, where the new campus opened in 1972. Designed by architect William Pereira and supported by major philanthropic contributions, the Malibu campus became the center of university life. Today, Pepperdine comprises Seaver College for undergraduate studies and four graduate schools, including law, business, education and psychology, and public policy. It is recognized as a Research 2 (R2) institution with high research activity and also maintains graduate campuses and international programs across the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, reflecting its global academic presence and continued institutional growth.
