COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science undergraduate curriculum at Oregon State University offers a rigorous and comprehensive four-year academic plan designed to build both foundational and advanced skills in computing. In the first year, students complete introductory coursework in engineering, mathematics, writing, and communication, including Differential and Integral Calculus (MTH 251, 252), Composition (WR 121), and design-based engineering courses such as ENGR 102 and 103. They also fulfill general education requirements in arts and humanities and scientific inquiry. The curriculum introduces algorithmic thinking and problem-solving early on, preparing students for more technical coursework.In the second year, students begin core computer science courses such as CS 162 (Introduction to Computer Science II) and CS 261 (Data Structures), alongside courses in discrete mathematics (MTH 231) and technical or business writing (WR 227 or WR 314). Electives and general education courses focused on diversity, power, oppression, and social sciences round out the year. Students also take their first option-specific course depending on their selected track in Applied CS, Cybersecurity, or Computer Systems.The third year deepens technical knowledge with courses like CS 340 (Databases), CS 361 and 362 (Software Engineering I & II), CS 325 (Analysis of Algorithms), and CS 374 (Operating Systems). Ethical considerations in computing are addressed through CS 391 or PHL 330. Option courses further tailor the degree to student interests.In the final year, students focus heavily on option courses aligned with their specialization and complete ENGR 330, which emphasizes inclusivity in engineering. Additional electives allow for academic flexibility. Over the course of the degree, students develop the technical, ethical, and communication skills necessary for careers in computing. The program totals 180 credits and includes both theoretical and applied learning, preparing students for rapidly evolving technology fields and lifelong professional development.
