COURSE CURRICULUM

The Photography and Digital Studio program at Oregon State University offers a structured four-year curriculum that balances studio practice, art history, general education, and language study. In the first year, students build foundational skills in art and photography through courses such as ART 100, ART 115, ART 117, and ART 121. They also begin fulfilling general education requirements in communication, writing, math, health, and physical activity. By spring term, students are expected to complete WR 121, college-level math, and a communication course, and select from intermediate studio electives like ART 215, 222, or 263.In the second year, students expand their studio experience and begin art history coursework while also working toward completing a two-year BA language requirement. Key courses include ART 131, ART 340, ART 347, and ART 264, with additional requirements in biological and physical sciences. Students also choose two 200-level art history electives from courses such as ART 204 or ART 210.The third year focuses on advanced photography practice, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. Students take 300- and 400-level photo studios, upper-division art history, and complete upper-level courses in science, cultural diversity, social processes, and Western culture. WR II and a Writing Intensive Course (ART 411) are completed during this year.In the final year, students focus on upper-division electives and completing remaining general education (CLA Core) requirements in humanities, social sciences, fine arts, synthesis, and non-Western studies. Emphasis is placed on selecting upper-division courses (300–400 level) to meet the university's 60-credit requirement for upper-division coursework. Throughout the program, students gain both technical and conceptual skills, preparing them for creative careers in photography and related disciplines. The curriculum also encourages interdisciplinary learning, cultural awareness, and critical engagement with social issues through both art and academic study.
