COURSE CURRICULUM

The Speech/Theatre Education (Comprehensive) Bachelor of Science in Education at Northwest Missouri State University is a well-structured program that combines theatre, communication and professional teaching preparation across eight semesters. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational courses such as Theatre Foundations, Theatre Appreciation and basic communication, along with general education subjects and education courses like developmental foundations and professional learning communities. These early semesters help students build confidence in performance while understanding the basics of teaching.By the second year, students begin developing more specialized skills through acting, design principles and oral interpretation. They also gain technical theatre experience and participate in debate and forensics practicum. During this stage, students must complete key milestones such as achieving advanced standing in theatre and applying for admission into the teacher education program. Science requirements and introductory special education courses ensure they are prepared to work with diverse learners.In the third year, the program becomes more focused on advanced theatre and communication skills. Students take courses in directing, theatre history, creative dramatics, communication theory and debate. At the same time, they continue their professional education training through courses in classroom management, curriculum design and teaching strategies. These courses emphasize how to effectively manage a classroom and engage students through performance-based learning.The fourth year centers on practical teaching experience and professional development. Students complete practicum courses, independent theatre projects and methods of teaching speech and theatre. They also take courses in multicultural education and adolescent psychology to better understand student needs. The program culminates with directed student teaching and a professional capstone, where students gain full classroom experience under supervision.Overall, this program requires around 142 credit hours and includes summer coursework to stay on track. It prepares graduates to become certified secondary educators, equipped with strong performance, communication and teaching skills, ready to lead theatre productions and coach speech or debate teams.
