COURSE CURRICULUM

The Special Education Cross Categorical Bachelor of Science in Education at Northwest Missouri State University is a comprehensive four-year program that prepares students to teach and support individuals with diverse learning and developmental needs. In the first year, students build a strong academic and professional foundation through courses in communication, mathematics, physical science and introductory education topics. They are also introduced to professional learning communities and educational technology, which help them understand the teaching profession and begin developing essential classroom skills.During the second year, students begin focusing more specifically on special education. Courses such as Introduction to Special Education, Educational Psychology and Developmental Psychology help them understand how students learn and how different disabilities affect development. They also study literacy, mathematics instruction and curriculum design, while gaining knowledge about supporting students’ behavior and academic progress. This stage ensures that students develop both subject knowledge and an understanding of how to adapt instruction for diverse learners.In the third year, the program becomes more specialized and hands-on. Students take advanced courses in literacy assessment, mathematics intervention and integrated curriculum delivery. They also complete practicum experiences where they apply teaching strategies in real classroom settings. Courses in multicultural education, language and communication disorders, and special education methods further prepare students to work effectively with diverse populations. A summer session focuses on transition planning, career readiness and collaboration with families, which are critical aspects of special education.The final year emphasizes real-world teaching experience through residency practicums and student teaching. Students work directly in elementary and special education classrooms, gradually taking on full teaching responsibilities. They also complete a professional capstone and seminar, which help them reflect on their learning and prepare for their careers. Overall, this program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills and practical experience needed to become effective and compassionate special education teachers.
