COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish Education Bachelor of Science in Education at Northwest Missouri State University is a structured four-year program that blends language mastery with professional teaching preparation. In the first year, students build a strong academic foundation through introductory Spanish courses, communication, composition and education-focused classes such as developmental foundations and professional learning communities. These early courses introduce students to both the Spanish language and the basics of teaching, while general education subjects like literature, math and fine arts ensure a well-rounded start.During the second year, students advance into intermediate Spanish while beginning their required minor courses, which allow them to develop expertise in another subject area. At the same time, they study special education, adolescent development and complete science requirements. Summer coursework further strengthens their understanding of educational psychology, multiculturalism and adolescent behavior, all of which are essential for effective teaching in diverse classrooms.In the third year, the program becomes more specialized. Students take advanced Spanish courses such as conversation and composition, along with electives to deepen their language proficiency. They also continue professional education training through courses in classroom management, curriculum design and intervention strategies. These courses focus on practical teaching skills, preparing students to handle real classroom environments. Ongoing professional learning community courses support collaboration and continuous development as future educators.The final year emphasizes hands-on teaching experience and professional readiness. Students complete advanced coursework in teaching methods, Spanish literature and a senior seminar, followed by practicum and directed teaching in real school settings. This immersive experience allows them to apply their knowledge by planning lessons, teaching students and managing classrooms under supervision. The program concludes with a capstone course, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for certification and careers as Spanish educators, equipped with both linguistic expertise and practical teaching skills.
