COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Studies: History Bachelor of Science in Education at Northwest Missouri State University is a comprehensive four-year program designed to prepare students for teaching careers at the secondary level. The curriculum blends strong content knowledge in history and social sciences with professional education training, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for the classroom. In the first year, students focus on foundational courses such as Composition, Oral Communication, and U.S. History, along with world history options like The World to 1500 or Western Civilization. At the same time, they begin their education training through courses like Ecology of Teaching and Professional Learning Communities, which introduce them to teaching concepts and classroom environments early in the program.During the second year, students expand their understanding of both subject matter and teaching practices. Courses such as The Historian’s Craft, General Sociology, Educational Psychology, and American Government build analytical and social science skills. Geography and cultural studies courses help students gain a global perspective, while Special Education and literacy-focused classes prepare them to work with diverse learners. This balance between academic content and teaching methodology continues to strengthen their readiness for a teaching career.In the third year, the program becomes more specialized and practical. Students take electives in political science, economics, and history, allowing them to explore specific interests within social studies. Courses like Multiculturalism in Education, Classroom and Behavior Management, and Curriculum Design focus on effective teaching strategies. Additional training in assessment and literacy ensures students can plan lessons and evaluate student performance effectively.The final year emphasizes real-world teaching experience and advanced study. Students complete a Research Seminar and Methods in Secondary School Social Science, followed by a practicum and full-time directed teaching experience in schools. A capstone course concludes the program, helping students reflect on their learning and prepare for professional careers.
