COURSE CURRICULUM

The Middle School Education program at Northwest Missouri State University is designed to prepare students to become highly skilled and effective educators for early adolescents. The curriculum integrates educational theory, developmental psychology, and content-specific instruction with extensive hands-on experience. In the first year, students complete foundational courses in composition, oral communication, digital literacy, and the sciences, alongside education-specific courses such as Ecology and Developmental Foundations of Education and Introduction to Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. This combination ensures that students understand both general education requirements and the principles of teaching from the start.In the second year, students deepen their knowledge of adolescent development and learning through courses in educational psychology, developmental foundations, and introductory special education. Middle school content courses become more prominent, allowing students to focus on the subjects they will ultimately teach. Students also participate in the Professional Learning Community sequence, which provides early exposure to teaching practices and peer collaboration.The third year emphasizes practical teaching skills and methods, including classroom and behavior management, integrated curriculum design, and assessment strategies for literacy, special populations, and English language learners. Students continue to build subject expertise in their middle school content courses and explore multicultural education and middle school-specific pedagogy. A summer trimester further allows students to expand their content knowledge with electives and literature courses.The final year culminates in intensive professional experiences, including the Middle School Practicum and Directed Teaching, where students spend significant time in real classrooms applying their knowledge. Additional coursework in early adolescent psychology, content electives, and the capstone course ensures graduates are fully prepared to meet the academic, social, and developmental needs of middle school students. By blending rigorous academic coursework with extensive experiential learning, Northwest’s program produces well-prepared, confident, and reflective educators ready to positively impact students’ learning and growth.
