COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics Education program at Northwest Missouri State University is designed to prepare students for teaching mathematics at the secondary level, combining rigorous mathematics coursework with practical education experiences. This accredited program emphasizes both mastery of mathematical concepts and the development of effective teaching skills. Students progress through a structured, cohort-based sequence of courses that integrates professional learning communities (PLCs) and education theory with hands-on classroom practice. From the first year, students engage in foundational courses such as Calculus I and II, computational reasoning, general statistics, and educational foundations, alongside Professional Learning Community experiences that provide early exposure to teaching methods. In the second year, students deepen their mathematical knowledge through courses like linear algebra, college geometry, and transition-to-proof courses, while also exploring education-focused classes in curriculum, assessment, and special education. Practical applications are emphasized through methods courses, technology integration, and adolescent development studies, preparing students to effectively engage diverse learners in real classroom environments.In the third year, students focus on modern algebra, educational psychology, intervention strategies, multicultural education, and literacy support for special populations, while continuing to participate in PLCs. Physical sciences, laboratory experiences, and global learning opportunities complement this knowledge, fostering a well-rounded educational foundation. The final year is centered on intensive, hands-on teaching experiences, including directed teaching placements and a professional capstone project, where students apply theory and practice to real classroom settings. Additional courses in mathematics, fine arts, American experiences, and social and behavioral sciences ensure breadth in both content knowledge and cultural awareness. Students also complete a course connecting mathematics content with teaching strategies, solidifying their pedagogical skills.Throughout the program, students develop essential teaching competencies, including curriculum design, classroom management, assessment strategies, technology use, and culturally responsive teaching practices. By combining mathematics expertise with professional preparation, the program equips graduates to confidently enter the workforce as effective secondary mathematics educators, ready to inspire and educate future generations in a dynamic and diverse classroom environment.
