COURSE CURRICULUM

Northwest Missouri State University’s elementary education program prepares students to begin teaching from their first semester, providing extensive hands-on experience in real classrooms. From the freshman year, students are placed in the on-campus Horace Mann Laboratory School, where they observe and assist master teachers, gaining practical experience in lesson planning, classroom management, and student assessment. These early experiences are complemented by over 150 hours of clinical placements in diverse regional schools, allowing students to work with a wide range of students and educational settings.The program balances professional practice with a strong foundation in academic coursework. Students complete courses in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, child development, educational psychology, and classroom management. They also take general education courses such as composition, oral communication, humanities, social sciences, and mathematics to support a well-rounded educational background. Coursework is designed to integrate theory with practice, ensuring that students are prepared to design curriculum, implement lessons, and apply assessment strategies effectively.During the junior and senior years, students progress into more advanced practicum experiences, including the Residency Practicum and Directed Student Teaching. These placements provide full immersion in the classroom, where students lead instruction, manage learning environments, and refine teaching strategies under the guidance of experienced educators. Additional professional seminars and capstone experiences ensure students graduate with a deep understanding of pedagogy, curriculum design, and culturally responsive teaching practices.Graduates of the program achieve a 100% placement rate, entering the workforce ready to meet regional demand for qualified elementary teachers. By combining a structured curriculum, early and sustained professional experiences, and access to a laboratory school environment, Northwest ensures its elementary education majors develop the skills, confidence, and expertise necessary to make an immediate and lasting impact in their classrooms.
