COURSE CURRICULUM

Northwest Missouri State University’s Bachelor of Science in Education in Early Childhood Education is structured to guide students through a comprehensive, hands-on curriculum that spans four years. In the first year, students build foundational skills through courses in composition, oral communication, mathematics, biology, geography, arts appreciation, information technology, and professional learning communities. These courses emphasize both academic fundamentals and the integration of technology and education theory.The second year focuses on the study of child development, educational psychology, and early childhood literacy. Students engage in foundational courses such as early childhood developmental foundations, early childhood assessment, introduction to special education, and practicums in infant, toddler, and preschool settings. Students also explore pedagogy through study abroad or capstone practicum opportunities, and they formally apply for admittance to the Professional Education Unit, marking a milestone in their professional preparation.In the third year, the program emphasizes curriculum design, assessment, and instructional strategies for early learners. Courses include early childhood curricular approaches, curriculum and assessment for grades K-3, literacy assessment and intervention, math and science in elementary classrooms, and family and community resources. Students participate in professional learning communities, gaining collaborative and leadership experience, and complete additional practicums to apply theoretical knowledge in real classroom settings. Humanities courses complement the specialized training, ensuring a well-rounded education.The fourth year prepares students for leadership and specialized teaching roles. Courses in trauma-informed practices, culturally responsive pedagogy, early childhood leadership and program management, and methods in early childhood special education develop advanced professional competencies. Students complete directed teaching experiences, professional learning communities, and capstone or study abroad practicums. During this final year, students take the Praxis exam, apply for student teaching, and submit applications for graduation, ensuring they are prepared for licensure and professional entry.Throughout the program, students accrue extensive clinical experience—over 550 hours—through integrated practicum placements, positioning them to emerge as knowledgeable, reflective, and skilled early childhood educators capable of making a meaningful impact on children’s learning and development.
