COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry Education (B.S.Ed.) program at Northwest Missouri State University is a comprehensive four-year degree designed to prepare students to become skilled secondary-level chemistry teachers. The curriculum is carefully structured across eight terms, combining strong scientific knowledge with professional education training.In the first year, students build a solid foundation with courses such as Principles of Biology, General Chemistry I & II, Composition, and Communication, along with introductory education courses like Ecology and Developmental Foundations of Education. The second year advances into more technical subjects, including Calculus I & II, Organic Chemistry, and Classical Physics, while also introducing Special Education and curriculum development concepts.By the third year, students begin integrating their scientific and teaching knowledge. Courses such as Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry Practicum, Educational Psychology, and classroom management help develop both subject expertise and teaching skills. Students also study government, humanities, and social sciences to meet core requirements and broaden their perspective.In the final year, the focus shifts toward advanced chemistry and real-world teaching experience. Students take specialized courses like Physical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Laboratory Safety. At the same time, they complete professional education requirements, including teaching methods, adolescent psychology, and multicultural education.The program culminates in a full semester of student teaching (Directed Teaching) along with a Professional Capstone, where students apply everything they have learned in real classroom settings. Practical experiences such as practicum courses and teaching internships ensure that graduates are confident and classroom-ready.Overall, this program blends rigorous science education with hands-on teaching practice, preparing students to effectively teach chemistry at the high school level or pursue further studies in education or science.
