COURSE CURRICULUM

The K-12 Art Education Bachelor of Science in Education program at Northwest Missouri State University is carefully structured to build both artistic and teaching skills over multiple semesters. In the first year, students complete foundational courses such as composition, drawing, two-dimensional design, art history, and foundations in art education. These courses help students develop basic artistic techniques and communication skills while preparing for advanced standing requirements. The second semester continues with composition, three-dimensional design, educational psychology, and additional art history, along with U.S. history. During the first summer, students complete core courses like humanities and oral communication to stay on track.In the second year, students begin integrating art practice with educational concepts. Courses include special education, government, ceramics, painting, and either life drawing or digital art. The following semester introduces literacy development, visual art concepts, sculpture, and printmaking or photography. At this stage, students must complete advanced standing requirements, including coursework, written analysis, and art critiques, to progress into upper-level studies. They also apply for admission to the teacher education program. A summer humanities course further supports academic progress.In the third year, the focus shifts more toward teaching preparation. Students study classroom management, curriculum design, professional learning communities, and multicultural education, along with life sciences and art electives such as fiber design and art history. Throughout the program, students must maintain minimum grade requirements and complete milestone courses to stay on track. Overall, the curriculum combines studio art, art history, and education coursework, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to teach art effectively while also developing strong creative and analytical abilities.
