COURSE CURRICULUM

The Writing major at Northwest Missouri State University is designed to develop adaptable, skilled writers capable of communicating effectively across professional, academic, and creative contexts. In the first year, students establish a foundation with courses in Composition I and II, Introduction to Literature, and Introduction to Creative Writing, alongside general education courses such as University Seminar, American Government, social sciences, and life sciences. This first year ensures students gain critical reading, analytical thinking, and clear written communication skills. The second year builds on these skills with courses like Professional and Technical Writing, Writing and Rhetoric, and Fundamentals of Oral Communication, while also allowing exploration of writing electives, minors, and global perspectives. Science, physical labs, and arts requirements provide a well-rounded liberal arts foundation. In the third year, students advance into specialized coursework such as Advanced Professional and Technical Writing, Publication Skills, and Studies in Language and Linguistics. Digital literacy, approved writing electives, and continued minor courses expand both technical proficiency and creative expression. The fourth year emphasizes professional preparation and application, featuring an Internship in Writing and Research and Professional Portfolio Preparation, enabling students to compile a strong portfolio for employment or graduate studies. Electives and minors throughout the program ensure flexibility, interdisciplinary learning, and the opportunity to tailor the degree to individual interests. Across all four years, students refine critical thinking, research, writing, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in publishing, communications, marketing, content creation, education, and other writing-intensive professions. The curriculum is designed not only to produce capable writers but also to cultivate analytical thinkers, problem solvers, and professional communicators. Graduates leave prepared to thrive in diverse career paths or advanced academic programs, equipped with both creative and practical writing skills that are highly valued in today’s job market.
